What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting
A minimum of 16 people perished and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.
The deceased are yet to be formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Listed are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
