UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a girl containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing unique fears and drives. These souls can take over at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
