Some groups on the opposing sides who offer only complaints: Labour is getting on with the job of economic renewal.
In the latest financial plan, the correct decisions were taken for Britain, reducing energy expenses with £150 off bills, defending public healthcare and combating the problem of impoverished children by eliminating the two-child cap. Steps were likewise implemented that the revenue we raised through taxes was done equitably, with all paying their share but those with the largest means bearing an appropriate burden.
Because of the policies implemented, the budget created a more stable economic environment, reducing price increases and sovereign debt returns. This is crucial for defending our public services, when £1 in every £10 spent by government goes on borrowing costs.
Advancing Financial Initiatives
The plan reinforces the action we have already taken to boost financial conditions: allocating £120 billion in additional funding in such things as roads, rail and energy; implementing major regulatory changes in a generation to favor construction, not impediments; promoting the development of Heathrow and Gatwick; and signing trade deals with the EU, India and the US.
Collectively, these have allowed us to exceed our growth forecasts.
Renewing Our Nation
As I outlined at the party conference, the government’s purpose is exactly the renewal of our economy, our communities and our state. By doing that, we will halt deterioration and restore faith in our country.
We will take on those on the political extremes who only offer complaints and whose approach would lead to further decline. Let me be clear, increasing public debt or bringing back fiscal restraint – that is the strategy of degradation and I will not accept it.
A Comprehensive Growth Mission
In a speech on Monday, I will frame the economic measures within the broader economic renewal on which the government will be judged at the end of this parliament.
If we are to achieve the national renewal we seek, we must do more to encourage growth, to combat unemployment among young people and to pursue closer international cooperation with our trading partners.
Bureaucracy Reduction Effort
Our growth mission will include a refreshed emphasis on removing superfluous red tape. Frequently it was those on the left who have supported restrictions, but there is nothing advanced in regulations which merely act to raise the cost of living for the poorest, to hinder financial expansion unnecessarily, or prevent a Labour government achieving its aims.
That is why I am asking the business secretary to confront the variety of unnecessary embellishment and needless paperwork that increase expenses and impede our industrial strategy.
Social Security Reform
Economic renewal also demands that we must continue to overhaul social security. We took over an ineffective structure that left children too poor to eat and which discarded youth as incapable of employment.
We must not accept either part of that failing Tory system. Hence the reason we will do more to support adolescents in reaching their abilities.
For when people are neglected in your early career, if you are not given the support you need to overcome your mental health issues, or if you are merely dismissed because you are experiencing cognitive variations or handicaps, then it can imprison you in a loop of worklessness and dependency for decades.
This imposes financial burdens, is harmful to our efficiency, but far more significantly, it eliminates prospects and ignores potential. Any Labour government worthy of the name must not disregard this.
Hence the explanation we have appointed an ex-health minister to make implementable proposals to help young people with health conditions access work, training or education – making certain they get help to thrive and not sidelined.
Worldwide Business Development
Lastly, we need additional measures to help our businesses trade internationally. No believable commercial perspective for Britain that does not position us as an open, trading economy.
We have to address the reality that the mishandled separation arrangement considerably harmed our commerce. It isn't necessary to have a PhD in economics to know that constructing needless commercial obstacles with your largest commercial ally will hurt growth and raise the cost of living.
Thus an aspect of our economic renewal will be persisting in advancing toward a closer trading relationship with the EU. When we can access more affordable sustenance, improve development and produce work opportunities by having a stronger connection with Europe, we should.
A Serious Plan for Serious Times
A budget based on fair choices for Britain must be backed up with a determination to achieve the economic renewal that the country needs.
Through implementing a substantial, courageous extended strategy, not a set of short-term remedies, we will rejuvenate the country. We need to transform once more a meaningful society, with a serious government, competent jointly to perform demanding actions to reclaim command of our destiny.
By having a clear mission to renew our economy, our communities and our state, we will execute the modification we committed to – and then be evaluated based on it during the upcoming vote.
