Pat Bamford Signs With Sheffield United After Leading Derogatory Chants Targeting Manager Chris Wilder
Patrick Bamford is now a member of the Championship side just half a year after instigating disrespectful chants targeting the team's coach, Wilder.
The 32-year-old forward, without a club since leaving Leeds United, has agreed to a contract joining the second-tier strugglers until January. His seven-year career at Elland Road was ended through agreement this past summer.
One of the player's last memorable actions as a Leeds player was to lead offensive chants regarding Chris Wilder during Leeds' promotion celebrations this spring. Now, the former England player is set to play for Wilder as the Blades’ manager looks to pull the team he loves out of the relegation zone.
Previous Conflict Involving the Striker & the Manager
Both men had history prior to Leeds won promotion to the top flight last season and United lost the playoff final to Sunderland. Wilder described Bamford as “a muppet” when the situation was different during the 2018-19 season and the Blades secured automatic promotion whereas Leeds United missed out in the playoffs.
Making Amends & Moving Forward
Everything appears to have been resolved with United, the league's least productive attack, in desperate need of a boost in attack and Bamford aiming to resurrect his career.
The Wilder chant spread widely in April. A repentant Bamford along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, phoned Wilder the next day.
Wilder stated at the time: “Spoke with Patrick yesterday and I’ve no issue at all with it. I'm uncertain regarding the language from a fellow pro! However I valued and respected him giving me a call.
“We spent a short while and similarly I spoke to Daniel Farke as well and had a longer discussion with him and he's a super guy, a class act. When I was playing we used to give it and accept it and that is an integral part of football across all levels, even on Sunday league. I have absolutely no issue. I am cool with it and I said that to Pat.”
Latest Playing Challenges
Bamford featured in 18 appearances for Leeds last season however the ex- Forest, Chelsea FC and Boro player has struggled with injury over the past few seasons.
