Report Uncovers Alarming Statistics

A report titled “Until Harm Stops” submitted FoI requests to children’s services departments across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Statistics from 135 local authorities revealed that out of 2,335 minors categorized as having been exploited or suspected of having been trafficked, eight hundred sixty-four (37%) were listed as disappeared.

Overall 141 municipal councils responded to inquiries about unaccompanied minor refugees in their care, who totaled eleven thousand nine hundred ninety-nine young people. Of these, 1,501 (13%) were listed as disappeared.

Serious Threat for Vulnerable Minors

The study, issued by advocacy groups, warns that these populations are at “extremely elevated danger” of going missing from care.

Some trafficked children in the UK are UK nationals while the remainder are from abroad.

They have probably experienced either predatory misuse or unlawful manipulation, for example by county lines gangs.

Structural Failures in Protection

Government bodies have a statutory duty to protect and assist trafficked and unaccompanied children under youth safety systems. However, there is no released national authorities data on the issue.

The recent study cautions that elements such as insecure immigration status can amplify young people’s susceptibility to further harm, placing them at significant risk of re-exploitation and renewed exploitation.

Demands for Intervention

It says there is a “persistent and serious deficiency” in protection and urges local authorities and police to make certain following of effective methods.

The researchers also advise the National Education Department to guarantee all trafficked and unaccompanied children can receive appropriate accommodation that protects them from being abused further.

Lodging Issues

Since late 2021, government bodies have been mandated to ensure that all children in care under 16 are assigned to settings that give protection.

Nevertheless, youths in their late teens can still be accommodated in so-called “assisted housing” that does not give day-to-day care.

The representative added that the steps include enhancing the availability of supervised accommodation, improved communication, mandating the creation of multi-agency child protection teams in every area, and establishing a new obligation on partners to systematically involve education and childcare settings in their safety measures to help prevent children falling through the cracks.
