Nutrition Assistance Set to Cease for Over 40 Million Throughout Continuing US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities stated recently that nutrition assistance payments through a critical national support systems won't be issued during the coming month amid the persistent federal closure.

Shutdown Extends For Nearly Four Weeks

The federal closure had reached its 25th day when the announcement was made, in response to calls from over 200 Democratic representatives urging the USDA to access contingency funds to pay for the upcoming nutrition payments.

“Ultimately, funds are depleted,” the department confirmed. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” starting next month.

Millions Affected

Over 40 million Americans count on these food benefits, according to federal data. Some regions, such as one southwestern state, use of SNAP affects 21% of residents.

Internal communications seen by Reuters showed that federal authorities decided against using reserve funds for November food benefits.

Legislative Deadlock

Lawmakers from both parties remain deadlocked over how to fund and reopen government operations.

A statement from the director at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities indicated that the administration had chances to act sooner to prevent benefits from running out.

“They had the ability and responsibility acted before now to get ready to access these resources,” the comments added. “Instead, it may choose not to use them to secure political leverage” while GOP lawmakers attempt to pressure Senate Democrats to vote for a funding package to restart federal functions.

States Prepare

Executives in Louisiana and Virginia declared states of emergency in recent days to free up resources for hunger relief in anticipation of food benefits expiring in November.
