New Year Celebrants Urged to Bundle Up with Snow Expected Across the UK
Weather experts have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Alerts
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are expected to go ahead, following last year's cancellation. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," said the national forecaster.
Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be low, meaning additional clothing essential, according to forecasters.
Further north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for Friday
Moving into Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

- The public are advised to plan for delays for travel on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.
Temperatures Set to Fall Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Medical Alerts Released
In addition, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities stated this signified the weather was expected to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This involves a likely increase in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
The advice for all is clear: to celebrate the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is completely paramount.
