Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Major Signing for United

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack

The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.

Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:

  1. The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
