Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their release of a controversial video.

The Message That Sparked the Controversy

The video footage, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously acted in armed forces or security capacities.

"Like us, you all swore an pledge to defend and uphold this national charter," the representatives stated in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our democratic foundation aren't just from abroad, but from right here at home. Our laws are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject illegal orders, you must refuse unlawful commands. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the law or our founding principles."

The Former President's Incensed Reaction

The clip seemed to trigger a furious reply from the ex-president.

On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional message, he declared: "This is really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their statements cannot be allowed to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Leaders Answer

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats released a joint declaration denouncing the statements.

"Partisan aggression has no position in the United States," they declared. "Elected officials who were featured in the video all served our United States with exceptional patriotism and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and risky death threats against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."

The party representatives also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to guarantee the protection of these members and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay delete these extreme digital publications and recant his violent language before he causes harm," the declaration stated.

Officials' Defiant Answer

The officials who participated in the video also published a response.

"We serve as veterans and security experts who care for this nation and swore an oath to protect and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "That oath continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that fundamental duty."

"The significant point is that the president deems it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their backs as they carry out their vow to the constitution and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "All citizens must join forces and condemn the ex-president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a time for moral clarity."

Additional Political Reactions

The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is demanding the death of public representatives."

He added: "This is an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this without delay and absolutely."

The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents historic in American history."

The GOP official also allegedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "defining the violation of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and determine all that."

Administration Reaction

During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a reporter, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the president is reacting to," the spokesperson declared. "You have current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to organize a digital communication to individuals of the national defense, to current military personnel advising them to defy the executive's proper directives."

She added: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to casualties, it can result in disorder, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally promoting."
