Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
The co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he will personally create this new flavor within a personal series showcasing issues the company has been barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Conflict Between Founders versus Parent Company
This latest development escalates the ongoing conflict among the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the British consumer goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have asserted that Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur stated via social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its colors, which match the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming product line is being created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which was first established several years back to support ex- political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes and Upcoming Intentions
The founder stated how he plans to create additional ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, following decades with the organization, mentioning worries regarding how the company's autonomy was undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
