A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future without fear.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
