2K Hires Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Follows Mixed Reception
Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a distinct vision.
The president expressed that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to better meet community desires.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
The news mirrors a comparable action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Team—
I understand you all just finished your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that partnership to endure.”
Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game demo was enlightening. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a clearer identity.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to mind and reimagined the title with a revitalized direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our audience.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To advance the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the latest Director of the team. After several months of conversations, he officially joins us on next week.
His leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having devoted the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most popular series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in receiving Ben soon. We are all looking forward to persist seeing the evolution of the game in the months to ahead.
David
Experience of the New Leader
Brinkman currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at other industry leaders.
Game Details and Vision
The upcoming game was announced in last year alongside a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch explains. "Take on the rivals with fresh skills, stakes, and tests that change every match. Will you leave securely with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The decision is yours."
Project Ethos does not have an confirmed debut schedule or supported systems, but players can anticipate more updates as creation advances.
